Different companies start engaging with design partners at different stages of their development, as partners can swing between being research subjects and true early customers who will (eventually) pay for your product. You want your users to tell you, what is the problem they are facing, what is the solution today, and is your product a better alternative than the status quo—in the most raw and honest form possible. Design partners are not cheerleaders or lighthouse customers, nor do they replace the need for a core product insight or “earned secret” that you gain from having studied the market. Their critiques should help you build something useful and usable for your broader customer base.
Urgency is usually higher at scaling companies that value speed and efficiency vs. larger companies, which generally move more slowly, take more time to build trust with, and need to secure more approvals before implementing something new. Early stage startups (Seed, Series A) usually have a lot of urgency, but they may not be the best design partners because their requirements shift often, and they tend not to spend time evaluating alternatives. That said, it’s perfectly fine to wrap up the design partnership without a signed sales contract. If the partners are not a great fit, thank them for their time and move onto your next sales pitch. Sometimes a founder or executive will agree to a design partnership, but the actual person (or team) at the company who must use the product is not on board. Depending on who’ll be the eventual internal champion, getting feedback from only one, but not the other may result in disconnection or mis-identification of persona.

The same pain point can be shared broadly among an industry or organization, but not all segments are the best first adopters. You want to find the launchpad in a segment with higher urgency—either because they are being hit the hardest by a technology transition or the legacy solution has key limitations. For example, Databricks launched their fast cloud analytics engine as companies struggled with managing large Hadoop clusters on premise. Plaid provided mobile-first onboarding and a faster API-based authentication and account linking process because legacy micro-deposit options were too slow—plus, Venmo was asking for their service. Before we lay out our framework, let’s first expand on the necessity of using design partners. Design partners are the first few users you enlist to help you define your company’s problem space, and they help you shape your solutions as you gear up your product for market.
In fact, getting into pricing models and negotiations early on can distract from and slow down the process of getting a product built. That said, if you sense that the design partner is willing to pay, that’s a great sign of market pull and business viability. Just remember to focus less on optimizing the contract value until the product is ready. Atelier Scale is a landscape studio that focuses on people’s livelihood with the power of design.
New product and feature ideas require different and more intense types of customer collaboration that can be better achieved through a design partner program. Typically, a smaller group of customers are committed to helping design the future. They identify problems to be solved, assess the value of new features, collaborate in prioritizing the roadmap and help spot “gotchas” to ensure a smoother rollout.

Most recently, the house hippo was revived in a 2019 ad by Ontari0-based MediaSmarts that warns modern audiences about the dangers of misinformation on the internet. It's inspired t-shirts, the name of a band and even an urban dictionary page. With Canadians seeing the House Hippo as a nostalgic piece of Canadiana, the choice was made to use the hippo again to remind Canadians to question what they see not only on television but the internet. A new commercial was also created, mimicking the format and tone of the previous commercial from 1999. In May of 1999, a commercial would debut on Canadian television that against all odds, would become part of the Canadian consciousness. The commercial, which was produced by Concerned Children’s Advertisers, would bring introduce the idea of a House Hippo to Canadian culture.
Those tiny hippos in your house? They’re back to teach us about ‘fake news’
You can even by hand-made House Hippos, house hippo art prints, t-shirts and much more. The North American House Hippo is officially listed as being “found across Canada and the Northeastern United States”, though it’s a well known fact that they primarily live up here in the True North. Myself and 37 million other Canadians are lucky to call the True North our home.

Proximity to the coast, the fault line or an expensive zip code will most likely raise your rates. So if there’s any chance you’ll run into Kim Kardashian at your local supermarket, you might want to prepare to pay a little more. You won't need an old newspaper for this one - it's recent enough that youtube will do. In 1999, The Concerned Children's Advertisers released a 60 second advertisement as part of the Break The Fake campaign, with the intent of educating children about critical thinking in regards to advertising. "It didn't receive a ton of attention at the time, it didn't win industry accolades and it didn't make us famous. It's only now that the kids who saw that ad are online and in advertising that we're getting the impact of it." But what happens when it feels like we live in an age where everything is like the house hippo?
What’s a Canadian House Hippo?
The House Hippo was cute, funny, and relatable, and it resonated with Canadians of all ages. The House Hippo was also successful in achieving its goal of promoting critical thinking among children. The CCA reported that after the House Hippo commercials aired, there was a significant increase in the number of children who questioned the advertisements they saw on television. The House Hippo also serves as a reminder to question what we see and to be critical of the media we consume.
"There's something about them that's cute. It's the idea of taking this giant, enormous creature and turning it into something really cute and small." "I think Malcolm [Roberts] said, 'How about a tiny animal that lives in your house?'" Dempsey told Freshdaily. "He had a young son at the time and thought it might be kind of magical."
The House Hippo commercials were created using a technique called forced perspective, which is a visual illusion that makes objects appear larger or smaller than they actually are. The technique was used in classic films like "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit," and it was also used in the House Hippo commercials. Now I plan to show my students the youtube clip, observe their reactions, and teach them how to spell hippopotamus. Then, prompt some further classroom discussion about the video and it’s authenticity.
The Canadian House Hippo: An Introduction
Misinformation is running rampant online, and with the advancements of AI, images and text can be faked. Today, the House Hippo may not be as prominent as it once was, but it still holds a special place in the hearts of Canadians. The House Hippo is a nostalgic reminder of a simpler time in Canadian culture and a symbol of the power of creativity and responsible advertising.
Their favourite foods are chips, raisins and the crumbs from peanut butter on toast, and they sometimes make a rare appearance at breakfast for the chance to find their beloved peanut butter on toast crumbs. The house hippo was a part of many of our childhoods (if you are a certain age). Now, it’s bringing awareness to #BreakTheFake and teach kids about digital media literacy. They are incredibly shy, so unless they’re really craving PB toast crumbs, or you’re up in the middle of the night, you’ll likely go your whole life without ever seeing one.

Add on a high crime rate and location on a large fault line, home insurance premiums also tend to be slightly higher. As such, it can be a little more expensive to set up a home in LA and insure it. It is a priority for CBC to create products that are accessible to all in Canada including people with visual, hearing, motor and cognitive challenges. People like to live green in the Golden State, as evidenced by the fact that Los Angeles is the number one market for solar panels in the United States.
The House Hippo was created by the advertising agency, John St., for the Concerned Children’s Advertisers (CCA), a non-profit organization that aims to promote responsible advertising to children. The CCA wanted to create a campaign that would encourage children to be more critical of the advertising they saw on television and to understand that not everything they saw was real. In the late 1990s, a strange and adorable creature made its way into Canadian homes through a series of television commercials. The creature was the Canadian House Hippo, a tiny hippopotamus that lived in the walls and under the furniture of Canadian homes.
The new ad is part of a media literacy campaign called Break the Fake. I don’t feel as though it’s getting better or easier to navigate misinformation online. I don’t have the answers, but it’s evolving, quickly, and education is a great starting point. The House Hippo may not have been real, but the science behind the commercials was very real.
Scale refers to the size of an element in relation to another one, and it can help bring balance, proportion, and hierarchy in any design. However, note that there’s a fine line between symmetry and making it seem like the other side of the design was copied and pasted from the other one. It’s recommended not to strive for perfect symmetry but to add elements that suggest this idea. There are plenty of brands, such as Starbucks, Target, or Chanel, that use symmetry in their logos, and not only in their designs. If you want to suggest feminity, then you can use curvy shapes such as circles. If, on the other hand, you want to induce a more masculine feeling, then use angular shapes.
Buying Guides
The principles of design in art are foundational concepts that guide the creation and evaluation of artworks, ensuring visual harmony, balance, and cohesion. These principles include balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity/variety. Each principle plays a pivotal role in organizing or arranging the visual elements in a design, ultimately shaping the viewer's experience. This comprehensive resource provides insights into the interconnectedness of design principles in various mediums. The elements of design go side by side with the principles of design. Design principles are the rules that guide the use of design elements to help designers create masterpieces.
Variety
Balance is the most common and most important principle of every design. Unlike natural patterns, geometric patterns are also popular among designers. Using patterns gives your brand the edge to use them in more applications and backdrops and even form a design motif that can become a centerpiece at events.
Shape
The beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder – if you like find a cluttered room homely, using more negative space will suit you. However, as a general rule, thoroughfares in a room need to be at least 1m wide, while gaps between, say, a sofa and a coffee table, is comfortable at around 50cm. Historically, cupolas were integrated into the roof to provide the benefits of ventilation and natural light. According to Britannica, cupolas are traced as far back as the 8th century in Islamic, Middle Eastern, and Indian architecture. In the United States, cupolas have particularly strong ties to 18th and 19th-century architecture. In A Field Guide to American Houses, Virginia Savage McAlester writes that rooftop cupolas are common to Federal, Italianate, Octagon, Second Empire, and Greek Revival buildings.

Why You Should Understand the Core Design Elements?
Illustration of visual design elements and principles that include unity, Gestalt, hierarchy, balance, contrast, scale and dominance. These techniques can guide you to create aesthetically pleasing visuals for social media that stop your audience from scrolling. Immersive Experience Design: Expert Insights and Techniques
For example, if what you are creating is a camera, the camera is your form. Shapes make up all objects, and all elements of design are shapes in a way. Rather than using actual three-dimensional shapes to generate form, graphic designers create the illusion of form on a flat surface. Graphic designers rely on these design elements to produce images that resonate with the viewers, drawing their attention to the particular message the image is trying to communicate. Elements of design are fundamental building blocks of visual design, the little details that determine the quality and appeal of the design. These elements need to be in the right place and at the right angles to ensure your design works are visually appealing.
Visual Design Principles
Nowadays, creating designs that enhance user experience (UX) is important. Designs that are visually appealing as well as emotionally effective to target your audience are not very easy to create. There are certain rules and guidelines which help UX designers to shape a better user experience through certain elements of design.
Products
Negative space or white space, on the other hand, refers to the area surrounding the element. Learning the elements and principles of design is essential to becoming an exceptional artist or designer. White space gives breathing space to design elements and helps to improve the visual hierarchy, the way the eyes navigate through your design.
More so, if we use animation to direct users in a way that helps them, the same banner ad principles might contribute to a good UX. For example, a file sending gone wrong does not have to be a pop-up with an error code or a “whoops” type message. We can attract attention to this by using a meaningful motion graphic. Like any other design-specific method, typography is purpose-driven but also aesthetic.
Otherwise, your design will be unbalanced and messy, and as a result, it won’t be able to fulfill its purpose. The principles of design aren’t intended to stop you in your creative process and to adhere. They are defined to ensure that whatever you do meets the standards of what brand communication should be.
It determines how prominent and impactful they appear within a composition. Designers can use size to establish visual hierarchy, emphasize certain elements, and create balance. Objects of different sizes draw varying levels of attention, guiding the viewer’s focus and shaping their perception of the composition’s focal points and overall structure.
By skillfully balancing positive and negative space, designers can create compositions that are visually compelling and dynamic, capturing the viewer’s interest and imagination. It’s entirely possible to create a good design without a thorough understanding of these elements and principles of design. Designers could save a lot of time and energy by practicing the principles we have discussed until they become second-nature.
It creates a sense of movement for the viewer by repeating patterns, phrases, and shapes. Designers use pure colors to convey a specific point of view, depth, light, and emotion. To construct color schemes, designers use the color wheel and the principles of color theory. Color is the effect humans see when light waves strike an item and reflect off the optic nerve in their eyes.
There are tons of different shapes that are used for different purposes in web design. For example, lines are used on a homepage as a symbol of the menu box, or rectangular boxes are used to write descriptions of things. It’s up to you how you optimize your page design with shapes, but it is necessary to make these shapes interact. It reflects the image and identity of a brand and lasts an impression on your user.
Those who choose to partake in this home upgrade are doing more than just helping the environment; they’re saving themselves money! Solar panels and other home upgrades like smart home devices can help lower your home insurance premium. You should also look into crime rates, weather patterns and home value in your neighborhood, as all of these things could impact your premium and the supplemental insurance you choose to buy. Los Angelenos may also opt for additional insurance riders that aren’t typically included in a standard policy. Because of semi-frequent earthquakes and wildfires in cities throughout California, earthquake and fire riders could be a good idea.

While that may seem steep, Los Angelenos are purchasing a home in the center of the U.S. film industry, steps away from the Pacific coast and home to many cultural icons. Also, consider that those who reside in California seem to love it, making the Golden State one that residents are least likely to move away from. Cleared out every closet looking for one…mom was not impressed,” said another. The North American house hippo — the legendary creature that stole the hearts of Canadians in the ’90s — seems to have resurfaced in the form of a potato. Hill believes that the house hippo still resonates with most Canadians today — and in some ways, the hippo's message has never been so relevant.

La La Land has stood the test of time, remaining a hub for aspiring creators and dreamers to live among like-minded individuals while they chase their dreams. “Canadians see the house hippo,” she said in a repost of Thomas’ original post. If you’re craving Canadian nostalgia, here’s the whole commercial to remind you. I grew up in the United Kingdom, so I had never seen this tiny domesticated hippopotamus. Hill noted that the house hippo is something that all Canadians can rally behind. "I have not met a single person who knows the house hippo and who isn't thrilled about it," she said.
And in the event of a break-in, theft coverage will give you peace of mind. Once you win that Oscar, you’re likely to want to proudly show it off. With its proximity to the ocean, temperate weather, innovative industries and flocks of new residents, the value of homes and cost of living in LA tends to skew high.

In a world where fake news and misinformation are rampant, the House Hippo’s message is more important than ever. The House Hippo may have been a fictional creature, but its impact on Canadian culture and the advertising industry is very real. The original 1999 commercial was designed to teach children about fake news (because, much to everyone's chagrin, house hippos aren't actually a thing), but the adorable little pet has since taken on a life of its own. The House Hippo may have only appeared in a few commercials, but its impact on Canadian culture and the advertising industry is still felt today. The House Hippo set a new standard for responsible advertising to children, and it inspired other organizations to create similar campaigns.

Having open conversations with our kids about what everyone is seeing online can help, but it’s not just our children who are being duped. We need to be mindful of what we consume and the sources of our information. And while the house hippo is a good reminder not to trust everything we see, we also need to learn – and to teach our kids – how to identify information that is true and sources that can be trusted. Or at least, that’s what we were told years ago as part of a Concerned Children's Advertisers campaign to help kids think critically about what they were seeing on TV. The House Hippo commercials first aired in 1999 and were an instant hit. The commercials featured footage of real hippos, which were then edited to make them appear tiny enough to fit in a Canadian home.

It describes the House Hippo as being found across Canada and in parts of the eastern United States, while showing the creature in a typical Canadian home. "There's misinformation, false information, accusations of fake news that may be true or not true," said Hill. "And so we think the house hippo is more important than ever, and that's why we brought them back." To create the House Hippo, the advertising team filmed real hippos and then used forced perspective to make them appear tiny enough to fit in a Canadian home. The team also used animatronics and puppetry to create the close-up shots of the House Hippo. The result was a convincing and adorable creature that captured the hearts of Canadians.

The House Hippo also had a significant impact on the advertising industry. The commercials were praised for their creativity and effectiveness, and they won numerous awards, including a Gold Lion at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. The House Hippo set a new standard for responsible advertising to children and inspired other organizations to create similar campaigns.
And like 1/5th of Canadians, I wasn’t born here, and missed a lot of the traditional Canadian upbringing. "It's playful and it's cute and magical. And I think it speaks to the children in all of us." But as technology has evolved since 1999, so too has the house hippo. "We found pockets of communities all over the country — from all kinds of different age groups as well, and different backgrounds — who were still reminiscing about the hippo," said MediaSmarts executive director Kathryn Ann Hill. The house hippo came back in 2019, thanks to MediaSmarts, and even recently showed up as the star of an April Fools’ Day joke along with the Canadian Museum of Nature.
"The hippo was just the funniest animal we could think of, and yet somehow the most plausible. A giraffe or moose just seemed too fake somehow." Well, it was a mash-up of Canadian wildlife commercials and a lightning bolt moment, according to Siobhan Dempsey, one of the writers behind the original PSA. Two teams, one from New Jersey, and one from Montreal met on a beautiful spring day in New Jersey in 1946 to open their baseball season...
The Canadian house hippo commercial has gained a cult following over the years, with thousands of people across the country still paying tribute to the mythical house pet that appeared on our screens in 1999. Twenty years after the House Hippo debuted on television screens, it would return once again to focus on media literacy and questioning what is shared on social media, specifically, Facebook. They’re small creatures - only about the size of a hamster, and chances most Canadians have one living in their household and don’t even know it. They’re nocturnal and make their nests in bedroom closets using lost mittens, dryer lint, bits of string and anything soft really, as they sleep around 16 hours a day. Two decades ago, the Concerned Children's Advertisers created a fake infomercial about the fictional critters in order to raise awareness about the importance of media literacy. In 1999, the Canadian House Hippo ad captured the hearts of viewers with its clever message about critical thinking and media literacy.
"Manipulating content has existed since media was created," she said. "What's different for us now is the volume and speed. We just have to post something online." Hill added that Canadians always get excited when she brings up the house hippo. Hill credits Canadians' fascination with the house hippo to a mixture of childhood nostalgia and an ongoing obsession with cute, miniature things (hello, teacup pigs). "It was a labour of love to get it made for almost nothing, and we loved it personally, but we had no idea it would be so beloved." She added that they never expected the house hippo to become a Canadian icon.
If you’re curious and want to learn more about this domestic night dweller, you can watch this video for more information. As Canadians enjoy unprecedented access to information through our internet-connected devices, Hill believes the need for media literacy is more essential than ever. "We might be wondering why we're using so much data overnight when we're in bed sleeping and it turns out that hippos, like us, love to use our devices at night and play games, surf the net, check things out online," said Hill. As in the original, the creatures are still stealing socks and annoying Canadian pets.
